Old School House

At Box Capital Developments, we had the pleasure of working on the Old School House project, nestled in the scenic Cotswolds. This multi-phase renovation, alongside Ashleigh Clarke Architects Ltd, focused on transforming the listed property to offer modern comforts while retaining its historic charm. The project consisted of two parts: the renovation of the main house and the creation of a multi-functional pool house.

The Challenge:
The owners had a clear vision: they wanted the house to maintain its familiar feel but be fully accessible, as one of the clients is now in a wheelchair. Our task was to overhaul the home while ensuring all the necessary modern amenities were integrated subtly, without compromising the heritage aesthetics of the property. Additionally, the project involved creating a new pool house that would serve multiple functions and fit seamlessly with the existing architecture and landscape.

Main House Renovation:

The main house renovation was extensive, with a back-to-brick transformation and levelling of three separate ground floor levels. This was essential to install underfloor heating and make the home wheelchair-accessible, ensuring the comfort of the client. One of the standout features was the installation of an automatic lift, designed to blend into the home’s architecture. Cleverly positioned in a corridor, the lift remains almost unnoticeable, offering accessibility without detracting from the aesthetic appeal.

The redesign of the ground floor, along with a new extension, enhanced the flow of the house, creating an open and welcoming space. The extension houses a spacious kitchen, utility room, and a luxurious master suite, all designed with accessibility in mind but without sacrificing the home's traditional charm.

Pool House Construction:

The pool house was another key part of the brief, designed to serve multiple functions, including being the plant room for the main house and the swimming pool. It also features an accessible outdoor shower and a changing room with a fully functional loo. Inside, a bright and airy home gym offers stunning views of the garden, and the architects cleverly incorporated a games room on the first floor, creating a space that is both functional and enjoyable.

The surrounding garden was also re-landscaped to ensure accessibility. Previously on multiple levels, the garden is now easily navigable, with access from the terrace into the garden and around the property.

Our Approach:

Working closely with the architects and the client, we conducted extensive research into accessibility solutions. This involved visiting homes that had incorporated similar changes and consulting with providers to ensure that the solutions we offered were the best available. Every detail, from the lift to the underfloor heating system, was carefully considered to ensure the home provided all the comforts needed without sacrificing its heritage.

The Outcome:

The result is a beautifully modernised home that respects its historical roots while offering modern, accessible living spaces. The Old School House is now perfectly suited for the family’s needs, offering the same charm and warmth it always had, but with the added comfort of full accessibility for the future. The pool house and garden offer additional functional spaces, seamlessly blending into the landscape and architecture of the original property.

For Box Capital, this project showcases our ability to deliver high-end, bespoke construction, especially in sensitive environments. We are proud to have created a home that balances tradition with the demands of modern living, ensuring the property’s story continues for generations to come.
